A Benchmark Brunello from Southern Montalcino
La Torre Brunello di Montalcino 2020 comes from a small, certified organic estate near Sant'Angelo in Colle, on the sun drenched southern edge of the Montalcino appellation. Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso and aged five years as DOCG rules require, this vintage earned 96 points from Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, who praised its balance, freshness, and restrained use of oak. It is a wine built for patience and for sharing.
Tasting Notes
Ruby red with garnet reflections at the rim, this Brunello opens with wild berries and forest fruit, layered with notes of tobacco leaf and sandalwood. The palate is full bodied and firm, with the fruit and fine oak tannins in close balance, finishing long and savory.
Food Pairings
- Braised Beef Short Ribs: The wine's firm tannins and bright acidity cut through the richness of slow braised beef.
- Aged Pecorino with Truffle Honey: A classic Tuscan match, where the wine's savory depth meets the cheese's nutty sweetness.
- Porcini Mushroom Risotto: Earthy mushroom flavors echo the wine's own forest fruit and tobacco notes.
- Grilled Lamb Chops with Rosemary: The herbal lift of rosemary draws out the wine's sandalwood and spice character.
Serving and Storage
Serve at 16 to 18°C, ideally decanted for an hour to let the aromatics open up. This 2020 is approachable now but will reward cellaring, with a recommended drinking window through 2040. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place away from vibration.
A Gift for Wine Lovers
A 96 point, organic, five year aged Brunello makes a memorable anniversary gift or a standout choice for corporate appreciation. Its pedigree and track record speak for themselves, no explanation needed when the bottle arrives.
The La Torre Estate
La Torre farms 36 hectares near Sant'Angelo in Colle, with just 5.6 hectares under vine across four separately harvested plots on Eocene soils rich in pietraserena, galestro, and limestone. The estate released its first Brunello, the 1982 vintage, in 1987, and describes its approach as traditional but not conservative: time honored methods paired with ongoing field research and environmental care.
