Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a 100% Sangiovese red wine from Montalcino, Tuscany, built for both the cellar and a special occasion table.
Overview
Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2020 draws on fruit from across the estate's 25 hectares of limestone based alberese soils in the eastern hills of Montalcino. The result is a polished, full bodied Sangiovese with earthy depth, fine tannins and a long savoury finish.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with earthy, petrichor like aromas alongside dark cherry fruit, developing into light oak spice that stays well integrated throughout. On the palate the wine is smooth and composed, with fine, polished tannins carrying a savoury, lingering finish. At 14.5% ABV, it shows the structure and ripeness typical of a strong Montalcino vintage.
Food Pairings
- Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb: The wine's firm tannins and savoury depth match the richness of roasted lamb and rosemary.
- Braised Beef Short Ribs: A slow braise's concentrated sauce meets the wine's structure and dark fruit without being overpowered.
- Aged Pecorino Toscano: A classic Tuscan pairing, where the cheese's nutty salinity plays off the wine's earthy character.
- Porcini Mushroom Risotto: Earthy mushroom flavours echo the wine's own petrichor and forest notes for a harmonious match.
Serving & Storage
Decant for 60 to 90 minutes before serving to let the aromatics open fully. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16 to 18°C, in a large Bordeaux style glass. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place, ideally between 12°C and 16°C, away from direct light and vibration.
Gifting & Occasion
A Brunello of this stature suits milestone moments: anniversaries, promotions, retirements and client appreciation gifts for the serious wine lover. Its DOCG pedigree and critic recognition give it the presence to mark an important date or to join a growing cellar.
Producer & Region
Founded in 1970 in the eastern hills of Montalcino, Altesino has long been one of the appellation's most forward-looking estates: it was the first producer to bottle a single-vineyard Brunello (Montosoli) and an early adopter of small French oak barrels in Tuscany. Fruit for this release comes from vineyards across the estate, home to the 14th-century Palazzo Altesi near Siena, where Sangiovese Grosso ripens on mineral-rich limestone soils to produce wines of elegance and longevity.
