Overview
Travaglini Gattinara 2022 is a full bodied, firmly structured red wine made from 100 percent Nebbiolo grown in the Gattinara DOCG zone of northern Piedmont, Italy. Grown on volcanic soils at the foot of the Alps, this Nebbiolo shows a cooler, more mineral driven expression than its counterparts further south in Barolo and Barbaresco.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet opens with violets and rose petals alongside sweet macerated cherry, blood orange, baking spice and a touch of worn leather. A bright garnet color leads into a mineral, iron tinged palate layered with small red fruits, fruit preserves and a persistent, firm finish.
Food Pairings
- Osso Buco: The dish's marrow rich sauce softens the wine's firm tannin while matching its savory depth.
- Porcini Mushroom Tagliatelle: Earthy, woodsy flavors align naturally with the wine's mineral, iron toned character.
- Roast Duck Breast: The fat and richness of duck meets the wine's bright acidity and red fruit core.
- Aged Castelmagno Cheese: A Piedmont cheese whose nutty intensity stands up to the wine's structure.
Serving and Storage
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, ideally after a 30 minute decant to let the aromatics unfold. Drink now through 2032, and store bottles on their side in a cool, dark, consistent environment.
Gifting and Occasion
A refined choice for Nebbiolo collectors and anyone exploring Piedmont beyond Barolo. Well suited to milestone dinners, client gifts or a thoughtful bottle for a wine enthusiast's cellar.
Producer and Region
Travaglini has defined Gattinara since 1920, farming steep, volcanic vineyards in the shadow of the Alps in northern Piedmont. The estate is known for its distinctive curved bottle, designed to let natural sediment settle to one side, and for Nebbiolo, locally called Spanna, that favors elegance and mineral tension over sheer power. Gattinara DOCG requires a minimum of 90 percent Nebbiolo, and Travaglini's wine is produced from 100 percent of the variety.
