Overview

Pio Cesare Langhe Nebbiolo 2023 is a full bodied, firmly structured red wine from the Langhe appellation in Piedmont, Italy, crafted entirely from Nebbiolo grapes. It offers an accessible introduction to one of Italy's most storied grape varieties, showing the fragrance and vitality the variety is known for in a more approachable, earlier drinking style.

Tasting Notes

The glass shows a mix of red fruit, floral and earthy aromas typical of young Nebbiolo. The palate is fresh and focused, with fine, well managed tannins that lend structure without heaviness, and a firm, persistent finish.

Food Pairings

  • Braised Veal Shank: The gentle richness of the dish meets the wine's firm tannin and bright acidity in a classic Piedmontese match.
  • Wild Mushroom Risotto: Earthy mushroom notes echo the wine's own savory, floral character.
  • Grilled Lamb Chops: The lean, herbaceous meat stands up well to the wine's structure and red fruit core.
  • Aged Toma Cheese: A regional cheese pairing that balances the wine's acidity with nutty, concentrated flavor.

Serving and Storage

Serve at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a medium to large bowled glass, allowing a short decant of about 20 minutes to open up the aromatics. Enjoy now through 2029, and store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place away from temperature swings.

Gifting and Occasion

An elegant, food friendly red that suits dinner party hosts, Italian wine enthusiasts and anyone discovering Nebbiolo for the first time. It makes a thoughtful gift for client appreciation or a seasonal celebration.

Producer and Region

Pio Cesare is one of Piedmont's most respected family wineries, founded in Alba in 1881 and now guided by the fourth and fifth generations of the Boffa family. Working from vineyards across the Langhe hills, the estate blends traditional methods with modern precision. The Langhe DOC designation allows Nebbiolo grown outside the stricter Barolo and Barbaresco zones to be bottled in a fresher, more immediate style, making it a graceful entry point to the region's signature grape.
